Joe Hunting is an independent filmmaker focused on directing works inside Virtual Reality (VR) app VRChat, with interests in virtual production and immersive VR / AR storytelling.
Most known for my award winning short film A Wider Screen, I explore documentary storytelling inside virtual reality app VRChat sharing the whimsical and intimate human connections possible with growing VR technology.
I began my film career in 2015 creating short experimental documentaries derived from a mix of found footage and personal recordings. In 2020 I graduated with a BA 1st degree in Film Production at The University of Gloucestershire, alongside having studied contemporary arts and games design at Unitec, New Zealand.
A Wider Screen premiered at Discover Film Festival in 2019 winning Best Experimental Film and was later screened at Encounters Bristol, London Short Film Festival and Inside Out. The film was also screened to contemporary arts classes at Unitec whilst I studied there.
My latest project is an eleven episode documentary series filmed entirely inside VRChat titled Virtually Speaking. Created during the 2020 lock down, in partnership with on demand streaming platform Discover.film. Virtually Speaking is part of the official selection at Raindance Immersive 2020.
Currently I am working as a freelance videographer and director for various social VR events and theatrical experiences, whilst shooting a longer form documentary inside VRChat, capturing the dawn in this new social media in a time capsule. More details TBA.

My daily tools for creating are Premiere Pro, After Effects, Photoshop, Blender, Gravity Sketch, Unity.
