Joe Hunting is a filmmaker from the UK focused on directing documentary works inside Virtual Reality (VR) app VRChat, creating poetic films that blend reality and fiction through joyful immersive worlds.
I began my film career in 2015 creating short experimental documentaries derived from a mix of found footage and personal recordings. In 2020 I graduated with a BA 1st degree in Film Production at The University of Gloucestershire where I specialised in sound design, alongside having studied contemporary arts and games design at Unitec Auckland, New Zealand.
My debut short A Wider Screen premiered at Discover Film Festival in 2019 winning Best Experimental Film and was later screened at Encounters Bristol, London Short Film Festival, Inside Out and more. The film was also screened to contemporary arts classes at Unitec whilst I studied there.
My latest project is an eleven episode documentary series filmed entirely inside VRChat titled Virtually Speaking. Created during the first 2020 Covid lockdown, in partnership with on demand streaming platform Discover.film. Virtually Speaking screened at Raindance Immersive 2020 and Imagine Film Festival 2021.
I have created four commercials for Raindance Immersive, A MAZE & CreativeXR highlighting their VRChat events. I am currently open for commissions for VRChat video productions.
Currently I am in post production for my first feature length documentary We Met in Virtual Reality, filmed entirely inside VRChat using cinematic virtual cameras to deliver an enchanting portrait of VRChat during the Covid lockdown crisis. Alongside the film will be a still photography exhibition under the same name. More details TBA.
My daily tools for creating are Premiere Pro, After Effects, Photoshop, Blender, Gravity Sketch, Substance Painter, Unity.
