Hey, I'm Joe Hunting. I am a filmmaker from the UK, currently working in California. Recently, I have been exploring the art of remote filmmaking within online Virtual Reality (VR) spaces.
My latest directorial film The Reality of Hope is a short documentary that premiered at Sundance Film Festival 2025, and is now available to watch via The New Yorker and DOCUMENTARY+. The film was additionally programmed at DOC NYC, Milwaukee Film Festival and Independent Film Festival Boston.
I'm probably most known for my feature film We Met In Virtual Reality, which premiered at Sundance Film Festival 2022 and continued to tour at True / False, CPH:DOX, Docs Against Gravity and more. The documentary is now streaming on max.
Earlier, I created an eleven episode series titled Virtually Speaking, plus two short films A Wider Screen and Club Zodiac, that both screened at London Short Film Festival.
Since 2023, I have been working with artists Tia Johnson and Rob Ouellette under the studio name Painted Clouds to support innovative real-time animation projects. We’ve collaborated on productions using Unreal Engine and social VR apps such as VRChat.
During 2020 - 2021, I worked as a remote VR videographer to capture online events for MIT, A MAZE, CreativeXR and Raindance Immersive. More recently, I was the VR cinematographer for a scene in Fatherhood with my Father on Netflix.
I've hosted several virtual production / VR filmmaking workshops around the world. Most notably, I ran two multi-day workshops at the University of Bergen, Norway. Additionally, I am a curator + programmer for Raindance Immersive festival, since 2020.
I have a film production Bachelor’s degree from The University of Gloucestershire, UK. I also studied art and games design at Unitec Institute of Technology in Auckland, New Zealand.
