Joe Hunting is a filmmaker from the UK focused on directing documentary works inside Virtual Reality (VR) app VRChat, creating poetic films that blend reality and fiction through joyful immersive worlds.

I began my film career in 2015 creating short experimental documentaries derived from a mix of found footage and personal recordings. In 2020 I graduated with a BA 1st degree in Film Production at The University of Gloucestershire where I specialised in sound design, alongside having studied contemporary arts and games design at Unitec Auckland, New Zealand.

My debut short A Wider Screen premiered at Discover Film Festival in 2019 winning Best Experimental Film and was later screened at Encounters Bristol, London Short Film Festival (LSFF), Inside Out and more. My second short Club Zodiac released in 2020, and was shown at LSFF.

During the first Covid lockdown in early 2020, I created an eleven episode documentary series titled Virtually Speaking, in partnership with on demand streaming platform Discover.film. Virtually Speaking screened at Raindance Immersive 2020 and Imagine Film Festival 2021.

I have created six commercials for Raindance Immersive, Venice Biennale VR Expanded, A MAZE & CreativeXR highlighting their VRChat events. I am always open for commissions for VRChat film projects.

My latest film is We Met in Virtual Reality, the first feature length documentary shot entirely inside of VRChat. The film premiered at Sundance 2022, and continued to tour showing at True / False, CPH:DOX, Docs Against Gravity, Docaviv, Sydney Film Festival, Karlovy Vary and more. The documentary is now streaming on HBO MAX.

My daily tools for creating are Premiere Pro, After Effects, Photoshop, Blender, Gravity Sketch, Substance Painter, Unity.
